Why We Love Stanford

Stanford is located in Santa Clara County, adjacent to Palo Alto. It is best known as the home to Stanford University, a private research university known for its academics, wealth, and close proximity to Silicon Valley. It has a resident population of 13,809 consisting of on-campus housing, graduate student residences, and homes and condos owned by faculty members. Its daily population of closer to 35,000.

Stanford University was founded in 1885 by a California senator named Leland Stanford. Together with his wife, Stanford built the university as a memorial to their only child who died from typhoid fever in 1884. The campus was built on 8,180 acres of stock farm in Palo Alto. Leland Stanford Junior University, which is still the legal name of the university, opened its doors in 1891. According to the Founding Grant, the university’s aim was to “promote the public welfare by exercising an influence in behalf of humanity and civilization”. The Stanfords wanted the university to be affordable, co-educational, and nonsectarian, and to teach liberal arts, technology, and engineering.

Despite financial difficulty, Jane Stanford tried to keep the university open after the death of her husband. An earthquake in 1906 destroyed several buildings on the campus, putting further strain on the university. It wasn’t until Stanford alumni and future U.S. President Herbert Hoover helped to streamline operations that the university was in a good position. Hoover also founded an institute to collect political documents, which is known today and Hoover Institution Library and Archives. Today, the university is an international institution consisting of seven schools with more than 16,000 students, 1,800 postdoctoral scholars, and 2,100 faculty members.

Stanford has many unique attractions for visitors and residents alike. The Papua New Guinea Sculpture Garden on campus has several immaculately carved sculptures amongst oak and cedar trees. The Arizona Cactus Garden houses more than 500 species of cacti and succulents from all over the world. The University Bookstore, Memorial Church, The Oasis Beer Garden, and Rodin Sculpture Garden are all additional must-sees for those visiting the area.
