Why We Love San Mateo

San Mateo is one of the larger suburbs located in the San Francisco Peninsula, holding a population of 97,207. It is located south of Burlingame, west of Foster City, north of Belmont, and east of Highlands-Baywood Park. San Mateo has an incredible downtown area with more than 800 restaurants and shops, some of which were built in the early 20th century. The downtown area also houses Central Park, the city’s most popular public park. It’s complete with picnic areas, a recreation center, a mini train, and a Japanese Tea Garden.

San Mateo was originally part of the Rancho de las Pulgas and the Rancho San Mateo. Its earliest recorded history is from Mission Dolores in 1789 when Spanish missionaries located and renamed a Native American village along Laurel Creek. By the 1850’s, wealthy residents of San Francisco sought out the area in search of permanent homes because of the milder mid-peninsula climate. The city expanded over the next several decades, drawing a large quantity of Japanese immigrants seeking work in the flower and salt ponds industries.

Today, parks and outdoor spaces are an important aspect of life in San Mateo, and there are over 15 located throughout the city. In addition to Central Park, there is also Beresford Park, Martin Luther King Jr. Park, Joinville Park, Ryder Park, and Parkside Aquatic Park. These spaces provide everything from bocce ball, skating, swimming, volleyball, and tennis. Near the border of Burlingame is Coyote Point Park, a 670-acre county park that is ideal for sailing and windsurfing as well as viewing wildlife at a small native animal zoo.

San Mateo’s economy encompasses many jobs within health care, technology, and financial services, as well as many retail fields. Prominent companies in the city include Franklin Templeton Investments, SolarCity, Sony Interactive Entertainment, GoPro, and NetSuite. The proximity to the diverse range of companies and average local incomes have made San Mateo one of the most expensive cities to live in. The median cost of a home in San Mateo is around $1.46 million, and the median rent is $2,242 per month.
