Why We Love San Carlos

Known as “The City of Good Living”, San Carlos is a small residential suburb bordered by Belmont to the north and Redwood City to the south. It earned the motto of “Good Living” after Frederick Drake promoted the town in the 1920’s. It was incorporated in 1925, and now has a population of 28,406 residents with an area of 5.54 square miles. San Bruno is home to the San Carlos Airport as well as two museums and prides itself on being a diverse, welcoming community.

The first inhabitants of the San Carlos area were the Ohlone Native Americans, who were hunter gatherers relying on the fish and bay area for food. European discovery started in the mid 1500’s, and the bay was mapped around 1775. Timothy Guy Phelps was the first American to purchase land in San Carlos, where he raised cattle. Construction for the railroad running from San Francisco to San Jose started in 1864, and by 1888, attempts were made to establish a town. Two attempts were made to develop the area before 1917, when the water supply improved and gas and electric lines were installed. With the addition of the city’s first electronics plant in the 1940’s, the town’s population started to increase. By 1958, the city’s industrial area was composed of electronics companies.

Today, San Carlos offers small-town charm with a quaint downtown and strong community feel. There are many attractions and local events for visitors and tourists alike. The San Carlos History Museum covers early Native American occupation to the space age, and the Hiller Aviation Museum focuses on aviation and helicopter history. Edgewood Park and Natural Preserve is perfect for woodland hiking, as is the Pulgas Ridge Open Space Preserve. There is a Laurel Street Farmers Market every Sunday, and the town hosts a carnival in Burton Park called “Hometown Days”, where residents celebrate with food, games, and a parade. There is also the Art and Wine Faire in October. A local tradition is decorating the “Balancing Act” sculpture in front of the Frank D. Harrington Park for holidays and events.
