Why We Love Portola Valley

Portola Valley is a town located in San Mateo County, sitting right on the San Andreas Fault. It’s bordered on the northwest by Woodside, Palo Alto on the southeast, Windy Hill Open Space Preserve on the southwest, and Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve on the north. It is home to a population of 4,611 residents. Based on per-capita income for communities over 4,000, it is the wealthiest town in the United States. The average household income is $354,744, and real estate prices are among the highest in the country.

Portola Valley was named after Gaspar de Portola, a Spanish explorer who led the first Europeans into the San Francisco Peninsula in 1769. It became part of a 13,000 acre ranch known as the Rancho el Corte de Madera in 1834, used primarily used for cattle grazing and lumber. Immigrants from all over the world moved to the area to work small farms or large estates. It wasn’t until after World War II that significant residential development took place. The community voted to incorporate to limit the amount of housing and business expansion to preserve the “pastoral quiet” of the area. To this day, there remains 1900 acres of open space.

Portola Valley is home to some incredible forested fields for hiking, biking, and picniking. The area is known for its network of impressive trails. Windy Hill Open Space Preserve, Pearson-Arastradero Preserve, and Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve are all excellent options to view diverse plants and wildlife. Redwood trees and meadows are abundant throughout these parks, and there are options for everything from archery to horseback riding.

Portola Valley School is a former one-room schoolhouse that was built in 1919, and is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It is used to this day for town council meetings. The Alpine Inn, now known as Rossotti’s, was built in 1852 as a gambling house. It remains one of the oldest drinking establishments in the state of California. Our Lady of the Wayside Church is a Catholic church for the community that was built in 1912. Additional attractions include Ford Field, The Village Restaurants and Shops, and Triangle Park.
