Why We Love Los Altos

Los Altos Hills is a city located in Santa Clara County within northern Silicon Valley. It has a population of 28,976 with a population density of 4,720 people per square mile. What started out as a town known for cottages and apricot orchards is now considered an affluent town in Silicon Valley. In 2017, it earned the title as the third most expensive ZIP code in the United States with a median home price of $4.9 million. Apple co-founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak built the first 50 Apple I computers in Jobs’ Los Altos garage in 1976. In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg scaled Facebook from 200,000 members to 2.5 million at an office in Los Altos.

The first known residents of Los Altos Hills were the Ohlone Native Americans, who inhabited villages throughout the Santa Clara Valley. After Spanish explorers found the area, the land passed into European control, then Mexican, then American. It was primarily used for orchards and farming until Paul Shoup and his colleagues formed the Altos Land Company in 1906, which was the beginning of the city’s development. They purchased 140 acres of land between Palo Alto and Mountain View with the intention of building a new town to serve the Southern Pacific Railroad cutoff between Mayfield and Los Gatos.

Los Altos was given its name, which means “the heights” in Spanish, because the land was highest at that location of that cutoff. After World War II, the population boomed with people moving into the Bay Area. In 1952, Los Altos became the eleventh incorporated city in Santa Clara County.

Today, the city has a semi-rural quality with lots of open natural space. There are very few sidewalks, and many roads have dirt shoulders and limited street lights. Los Altos limits commercial development to its downtown area and along the Foothill Expressway and El Camino Real. The Redwood Grove Nature Preserve is a Redwood forest with a rose garden, picnic area, and boardwalk, and the Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve is a rural preserve with 24 miles of hiking trails.
