Nicknamed the “Gateway to the Peninsula,” Daly City is within San Mateo County, bordered by San Francisco, Brisbane, Pacifica, South San Francisco and the town of Colma. Incorporated in 1911, Daly City was named after John Daly, a California businessman and landowner, who also opened the city’s first Bank. The town now has a population of over 106 thousand people, an area of 7.7 square miles, and eight neighborhoods. These include Westlake, St. Francis Heights, Serramonte, Top of the Hill, Hillside, Crocker, Southern Hills, and Bayshore. Interestingly enough, the neighborhood scenery of Bayshore was the inspiration for Malvina Reynolds’ song, “Little Boxes.”
Throughout the eight Daly City neighborhoods, there are several school districts in which Daly City residents can learn including Jefferson Elementary School District, Jefferson Union High School District, Bayshore Elementary School District, Brisbane School District, and South San Francisco School District. Daly City has two High Schools, Westmoor HIgh School and Jefferson High School, and four library branches that are a part of the Peninsula Library System. Actor Sam Rockwell was born in Daly City, and NFL hall of famer John Madden graduated from Jefferson High School.
Daly City is a sought after destination to residents, neighbors, and visitors alike. The city is home to landmarks like the famous Cow Palace Arena, a stadium with a full capacity of 15,000. The Beatles have visited the Cow Palace along with bands like The Supremes, The Rolling Stones, the Who, the Grateful Dead, Chicago, Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney and Wings, Santana, Elivis Presley, Kiss, Neil Young, Van Halen, Sting, Fleetwood Mac, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana. With the exception of a corner of the parking lot, the Cow Palace is located entirely within Daly City.
Daly City is also a huge shopping destination for San Francisco residents due to all the available free parking space and lower sales tax rate. In addition, one can find many big box retailers in the Serramonte and Westlake neighborhoods that are not available in the city. Daly City shopping centers include Serramonte Center and Westlake Shopping Center.
