Occupying much of the East Bay region with a total area of 821 square miles, Alameda County is the 7th largest county in the state of California, and one of America’s most racially diverse regions, with a population of over 1.6 million people.
The incorporated cities in Alameda County include Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Dublin, Emeryville, Fremont, Hayward, Livermore, Newark, Oakland, Piedmont, Pleasanton, San Leandro, and Union City. There are lots of convenient travel options to get to and from Alameda County. The main airport in Alameda County is the Oakland Airport (OAK), but San Jose (SJC) and San Francisco International Airport are also nearby.
The Spanish word alameda roughly translates to “tree lined street.” Originally used by the Spanish to describe the Arroyo de la Alameda, the river reminded Spanish explorers of a road lined with trees. This body of water is now known, however, as “Alameda Creek,” and runs for 45 miles to the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay. Want a closer look?
